'I’d like to keep him but the issue is that he is so scared': After showing up in a pawrent's backya

Posted by Sarah Brown

It started, as these things often do, with a meow from the backyard. After a week of persistent crying, a tiny stray kitten finally wandered inside this hooman's kitchen and decided to stay. Clearly, the Cat Distribution System had made another perfect delivery. The two resident cats welcomed the newcomer immediately, which is rare as cats never agree on anything.

Three weeks later, this new addition is playful, curious, and already ruling the house with tiny paws. He's still not sure about the hoomans, though. The moment his new pawrent moves too close, he bolts faster than a cat seeing the vacuum. Yet in his quiet moments, half-asleep and cozy, he allows a few precious pets before remembering he's supposed to be suspicious.

Now, it's time for the first big milestone: the vet visit. Getting him into a carrier might feel like a mission impossible, but patience and a few tasty bribes will do the trick. After all, trust takes time, and this little one has already taken the first brave step toward his forever home.

Newly adopted cat chooses owner’s mom over her, causing her to reach out and get wholesome help from

Posted by Briana Viser

There's nothing as painful as the scathing sensations of unrequited love, especially when it's from a furry feline. The protagonist in the story has had her cute adopted cat, Winter, for a little over a year. At first, things seemed perfect. Winter was attached to her, and made it apparent. She would snuggle her, follow her around meowing, and really show her a lot of love. Over time, she stopped being as loyal to her owner, a 19-year-old living with her mother, and she started showing affection towards her mother, whom she lives with.

This caused an initial discomfort and rift between them. The owner felt like her cat was choosing her mother over her, and no matter how she tried to make the cat go back to loving her, the cat was all over the mom instead. How heartbreaking would it be to have a cat choose someone else? She ends up writing a cathartic emotional post about it, and the internet gives her some wholesome advice that she can use.

Now That’s What I Call Cat: 24 Photos of Furiously Judgmental Felines Who Cannot Believe you’re Slac

Posted by Laurent Shinar

Cats are known for many of the unique characteristics, but purrhaps they are best known for being the most judgmental animals on the planet. Not only towards us hoomans, but to all living, breathing and purrhaps bothersome animals in this world. And while we cannot quite pinpoint what it is about feline psychology that makes them think that they are better than everyone else, there is no denying that that is what they believe, and they sure do know how to convey their displeasure through their eyes.

So while you slack off working, wasting precious hours that could be spent earning money to pamper your purr-machine at home, we figured we would back up your cat children and present you with this list of judgmental felines to remind you to get back to work. Those treats are not going to buy themselves now, are they?

‘My cat had a very distinctive meow so I had a pretty good feeling it was her.’: A family’s months-l

Posted by Laurent Shinar

Cats truly are a curious bunch. To know what is going on in their tiny minds would probably break our minds into pieces. As will the motivation behind this story, which tells the tale of a chonky cat child who lived a life of indoor luxury, wanting for nothing and doing anything it wanted, who one day decided to up sticks and run away.

A very curious plan indeed which cannot be explained by anything really, especially that she had never really shown an interest in the outdoors. But whatever it was that lured her to head out into the world to try her hand at survival, the magic soon faded and eventually a reunion with her pawrents happened. But we will never quite know what it was that made this indoor catto decide to leave it all behind for the cold and cruelty of the outdoors.

23 Feline Funnies That Purrfectly Make Meownday Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Posted by Blake Seidel

Once you become a pawrent, your life changes in many ways, but the main one is that you have less meowtivation to get up in the morning because you now have a purrmanent cuddle buddy who is just jonesing for you to stay in bed for 5…. more hours. We actually have to set our alarms for 15 minutes earlier than we need to because our cat knows that we need to get out of bed when the alarm goes off, so she sneaks up and snuggles with us to bribe us for more cuddle time. How are we supposed to get up and go to work when we're snuggled up under the covers with our cat child, all cozy and warm, and outside it's cold and we can't bring our cat with us? The math isn't mathing.

But, someone has to pay the bills that allow our fur baby to live the purrfect life she has, so, especially on Meowndays, we need a little extra kick to get out of bed. We need something to help us land softly into the work week without thinking too much about how we have five days in the office ahead of us, and that purrfect distraction is feline funnies. These hilarious cattos are here to uplift your Meownday mood and give you the strength and pawsitivity to face the week ahead without a second paws. So get up and go get 'em. You've got cat treats to buy and a cat child to pamper.

Wild and Wrangled

Wild and Wrangled by Lyla Sage is $1.99! This is book four, which is the latest installment in the Rebel Blue Ranch series. This released earlier this year and I’m hoping the deal sticks for a little longer. I’ve heard the hero wears a cropped shirt in this one, which is right up my alley.

She’s the one that got away. He’s the one that never let her go.

From the bestselling author of Done and Dusted and Swift and Saddled, the next book in the Rebel Blue Ranch series, a small town romance in which past lovers get a second chance to rediscover what they lost.

Camille Ashwood had always loved a plan. Her latest was her best yet. She was going to get married so she could secure her daughter’s future, get her overbearing parents off her back, and finally start building her own life in small town Meadowlark, Wyoming. Easy, right?

But when her groom doesn’t show up to the wedding, Cam’s life is turned upside down—she doesn’t even have a place to live. That is, until she finds out the house she’s loved since high school is available to rent. There’s only one the neighbor.

Dusty Tucker has spent nearly all of his adult life running. Running from what, though? More like Cam Ashwood. But ever since he returned home last year, the girl who was his first, well, everything has become a woman seemingly determined to keep him at arm’s length. And he was okay with that—at least, that’s what he kept telling himself. She was getting married, after all. But now she’s single and living next door. Dusty wants to show her that they can be friends, and that he can stay put.

Despite her best attempts to stay far away from Dusty Tucker, Cam realizes that being close to him is like slipping on her favorite jeans. Easy. Comfortable. That is until past wounds start to open and feelings—both old and new—wreak havoc. Nearly ten years after they first met, Dusty and Cam begin to wonder if their first love can also be their last. And this time, will it be forever?

Poison Study

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder is $1.99! It seems the book cover is sticking with the new romantasy cover trends. Lara wrote a Keeper Shelf review for this one and I agree with everything!

Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear…

A Bachelor Establishment

A Bachelor Establishment by Jodi Taylor is 99c! I believe this is a standalone historical romance. This was previously published under Taylor’s penname Isabella Barclay, just in case this sounds familiar to anyone.

High adventure and dark mystery combine in this sparkling historical romance from the internationally bestselling author of the Chronicles of St Mary’s series.

Elinor Bascombe, widowed and tied to an impoverished estate, has learned to ask little of life. With no hope of leaving, the years have passed her by.

Lord Ryde, exiled abroad after a scandal, has returned to strip his estate and make a new start in America.

A chance encounter changes their plans, plunging Elinor and Lord Ryde into adventure and not a little peril until, finally, they are forced to confront the mystery of what happened on That Night, all those years ago.

Are they both so entangled in the riddles of the past that they are about to miss this one last opportunity for future happiness?

A Trinket for the Taking

A Trinket for the Taking by Victoria Laurie is $1.99! Lara reviewed this and gave it a C+:

Looking at it with a bit of distance, this book is distinctly middle of the road for me. While I had a mostly good time reading it and I’m certainly curious about the next installment, it didn’t set my world on fire.

This mesmerizing mystery series debut from New York Times bestselling author Victoria Laurie introduces the captivating Dovey Van Dalen, once the belle of 1840s Copenhagen, now charged with recovering magic property from mortals—whatever it takes.

Dovey Van Dalen has a gorgeous day planned for her 200th driving her new Porsche, admiring the cherry blossoms abloom in her adopted city of Washington DC, and a little pampering. But her boss has other ideas. A powerful artifact has been stolen, and he fears it’s causing chaos in the unmagical world . . .

The rich and connected Ariti family has suffered a string of suspicious deaths, with no signs of foul play. Yet each member has died in the way they feared most. As the enchanting agent most skilled at blending in with mere mortals, Dovey must find answers and retrieve the dangerous trinket.

There’s just one unexpected by the time Dovey arrives at the art gallery where the Ariti patriarch died, FBI agent Grant “Gibs” Bartholomew has taken control of the scene. Dovey needs his cooperation to investigate—but she’ll have to hide her abilities, and her true objective, from a man who uncovers deceptions every day. And as they inch nearer a deadly truth, both will face danger even the spellbound would be lucky to survive . . .

AWS outage

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.

Rest and Digest Cat Memes for Lazy Cat Lovers Silently Scrolling in Bed

Posted by Briana Viser

Our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are at play all the time. They waver between each other, while one dominates "rest and digest" the other dominates "fight or flight." When you're stressed, working out, on the go, or any number of other situations that might have your nervous system full of adrenaline and in the "fight or flight" mode, you probably won't want to scroll on your phone, instead you might want to run a marathon and get some of that energy out. But for lethargic, listless people who are dominated by their parasympathetic "rest and digest" nervous system, scrolling cat memes in bed may be the perfect thing while you're in that physiological state.

Cat memes are really a gift for when you need down time. What better way to spend your lazy hours then with the wholesome comedy of cat memes. And not to mention the perfect weather of autumn grey skies and rain outside to accompany your giggles in bed. Enjoy these hilarious cat memes from everyone at I Can Has Cheezburger, a cat lover's paradise!

'I just saved a cat from my walls': Kind homeowner saves 4-week-old kitten after hearing mysterious

Posted by Blake Seidel

We had the opposite problem of this kind homeowner below - we had rats in our walls once. It was awful. We couldn't sleep from hearing them moving in the wall behind us at night. Thankfully, that's all behind us, and we would trade rats scurrying for mysterious wall meowing any day. But even if it's as cute as meowing, it's still pawsitively concerning. Meowing from inside the walls usually means that something is stuck there, and you'll have to tear down at least part of the wall to get it out.

After two days of not knowing where it was coming from, the tenant called a maintenance crew to check it out. They found a four-week-old kitten stuck back there, and they couldn't get it out. So, he took matters into his own paws and, with the help of a few friends, got the cute kitty out of the wall and is now safely being cared for. Soon, he'll get vaccinated, dewormed, and start living his fluffy life to its fullest. And it's all thanks to a hammer and some wet food!

'Is it possible cricket swallowed? Something that vibrates?': Sister learns for the first time that

Posted by Mariel Ruvinsky

We always say that even the most experienced cat owners still have things to learn about their cats. Always be vigilant. Never think that you are an expert, because something can always catch you off guard. You have to learn all kinds of things about cats throughout their lives, like how to get cats to drink more water even when they don't feel like it, because sometimes, they just don't. And how to correctly introduce cats to other animals when the time comes for that. And how to take care of senior cats, because they do change with age, and it's important that you know it.

There is always something new to learn, but we do think that most cat owners, or people who would like to be cat owners, know the basics. Like the fact that cats purr when they are happy. And sure, cats can purr in some other situations too, but usually, it's when they are happy. Actually, we thought that everyone knew that, like- everyone. But apparently not, and watching someone discover this fact is one of the funniest things that we have ever seen.

Squee from the Keeper Shelf: Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter Series

Posted by Lara

Content warnings for the series: Some pretty graphic violence, some questionable consent around bodily autonomy (but not by the characters we’re supposed to like). We’re dealing with immortal beings here who break ennui by doing ever more extreme things, both sexual and physical, so do be prepared for that. Don’t worry, the characters we’re supposed to like break free from this ennui through love and become ever more humane.

I’m not a huge fan of the term ‘binge-reading’. I prefer to think of it as covering myself in a cocoon of books within which I repair, rebuild and recover.

Angels’ Blood
A | BN | K | AB
I build that cocoon out of a very specific kind of book – one that bears no resemblance to my current reality.

Dukes? None of those in my life.

Vampires and angels? None of those either.

I’m looking for intense emotions that will help me process my own but also give me a sense of my own power and agency.

Elena is a Guild Hunter. She can smell vampires and uses this sense to track down vampires who have tried to escape their contracts. When a human wants to be made into a vampire by an angel, they sign a contract with that angel saying they’ll work for that angel for 100 years. Vampires are inherently filled with bloodlust and need to be tightly controlled until they can control their impulses themselves.

The world is structured in a hierarchy from most powerful (archangels) to least powerful (humans). It goes: archangel, angel, vampire, human. Raphael is the archangel of New York/North America. There are nine other archangels, each holding a large piece of territory around the world.

In Angels’ Blood, Elena is tasked with the secret project of tracking an archangel with bloodlust. Raphael is who she has to work with. Sparks fly! Raphael has grown distant from humanity after so many years of life. Elena has an incredibly traumatic past but is very much connected to her humanity, plus she’s no push over. Raphael and Elena are the primary couple and they get a few books that center their relationship.

While Elena and Raphael have a few books focused on their relationship, for the other couples in this series, it’s the standard ‘one couple’s HEA per book’. Initially I wasn’t that interested in the other couples because Elena and Raphael had me in a chokehold, but how wrong I was not to be excited about the other couples. The stories are diverse and diverting and thrilling.

Beneath Raphael in the pecking order are his Seven. Seven powerful vampires and angels. Each of them gets their own book and their own one true love. There are also books focused on other archangels.

I read Angels’ Blood ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) many years ago and I’ve reread it multiple times since then. It’s a great romance novel, there’s no doubt about that. But the first few times I read it that’s all I focused on: two beings falling in love. So the rest of the series didn’t interest me at the time as I wasn’t particularly curious about what comes after the HEA. More fool me because there is such treasure in this series and I denied myself for so long! I’m about to start book 15.

Moreover, I didn’t appreciate the first few times I read Angels’ Blood how a relationship in a romance novel could evolve after the “I love yous” have been said. As a standalone, book one is great, but it pales into insignificance when you see how rich, deep and abiding the bond is between Elena and Raphael once you’re a few books into the series.

Archangel’s Prophecy
A | BN | K | AB
There are family ties in this series but they tend to be emotionally complex affairs. Both Elena and Raphael have complicated relationships with their families. Some of these complexities are only explored much later in the series, so it’s a semi-permanent state of affairs that bio family stuff is fraught.

Far steadier is the love and devotion of found families. Between Raphael and his Seven. Between Elena and the other Guild Hunters. The sense of loyalty, fidelity and unconditional love wrap me up in warmth. Such unshakeable trust. Even removing the state of our current world from the equation, we’ve all been bruised by a lack of loyalty by those we’ve trusted in our own lives. Well, here is a fantasy in which promises are kept and love is true, to quote Shakespeare, even until the edge of doom.

When I first read that sonnet, that phrasing seemed extreme but in this tumultuous set of novels, that’s very much the vibe. Elena and Raphael are in great peril several times, but survive what seems insurmountable odds. Why? The answer lies in the magic of their bond, the love that unites them. That is what always saves them: their love for each other.

Archangel’s Ascension
A | BN | K | AB
Without going into too much detail, this resonates deeply with me because the connection I have with my partner feels like magic sometimes: it makes us both stronger and happier as though we are greater than the sum of our parts. And it yet requires effort to maintain. Reading about a couple with a bond that has powerful magic of its own felt so good to me.

Despite all the love and fidelity, this is a bloodthirsty series. The violence doesn’t particularly bother me because it is so over the top that it kind of passes me by. But I know for some the violence is a dealbreaker.

The series ends with the publication of book 18 in 2026. I’m trying to tell myself to savour the series, to read slowly, but as I navigate my current life’s challenges, I turn again and again to the comfort of a world in which good wins, in which good people have immense power, in which hardships can be endured.

A Sublime Selection of 27 Cat Memes With the Pawtential to Turn Your Day Around (October 19, 2025)

Posted by Jesse Kessenheimer

Memes are like catnip to humans. We get all feisty and excited when they're around, knowing a good laugh and some uplifting vibes are headed our way. The only difference is that human beings don't start skittering around the kitchen floor on all fours, scrambling up the curtains for a glimpse from up above.

Cats are built different.

Feral in every aspect apart from their plushy cat bed and carpeted tower, cats give the impression that they're fancy and regal, but deep down, the beast within rests. Awakened by the sweet smell of catnip, kitties go wild and revert to their former selves. Claws bared, teeth pointy, and ears flat on their heads, they'll scatter and skitter and run amok in the house until they've had their fill. Announcing to their household that they are the king or queen of this realm and their whimsical whims must be abided.

So as you scroll through some lovely cat memes, think of your own feline back at home, and maybe the hairs on your head will prickle and you'll start to feel the feral feline energy coursing through your veins.

'The transition to such a healthy boy is amazing': From lonely street life to cozy home, this rescue

Posted by Sarah Brown

From faint meows to cozy cuddles, this is the story of how one scrappy street cat became a beloved family member. Late one August evening, a small voice called out from behind the garages, and out came a determined little feline with an injured eye and a heart full of trust. He wasted no time claiming his hoomans, rubbing against their legs and purring like he already knew he was home.

They searched everywhere for an owner, putting up posters and asking around, but no one came forward. So, after a vet visit and a clean bill of health, they decided to make it official. The shy stray became Mallow, named after "chamallow," the French word for marshmallow, because he's as soft and sweet as one.

Now, instead of cold nights outdoors, Mallow spends his days basking in love and warmth. His once-weary eyes are bright again, and his purrs fill the home that was always meant to be his. From stray to snuggle expert, Mallow found his forever family and they found a little joy wrapped in fur.

21 Playful Pictures of Tunnel Tumbling Tabbies Having the Time of Their Nine Lives

Posted by Sarah Brown

A cat and a tunnel are a match made in whiskered heaven. Give them one, and suddenly you've unleashed a tiny explorer on the grandest adventure of their day. They slink in low, tails flicking, eyes bright with curiosity, before launching out the other end like a puff of mischief and fur. It's not just playtime. It's a full-scale mission of fun.

The crinkle of fabric is their call to action. Every twist and turn becomes a mystery to solve. Maybe there's a toy to stalk or a hooman ankle to surprise. Some cats treat tunnels as racetracks, zooming through in bursts of excitement, while others turn them into cozy hideouts for quiet naps and dramatic peeks.

Watching them is pure entertainment. One moment they're fierce hunters, the next they're loafed up and purring inside their little fortress. For cats, tunnels aren't just toys. They're portals to joy, adventure, and the occasional ambush. The best playthings don't need batteries, just a bit of curiosity and a whole lot of fluff.

Feline pawrent develops wholesome bond over 5 years with his cat who is scared of people, girlfriend

Posted by Briana Viser

Pet bonds are strong. There's something about loyalty with an animal that hits differently than with a person. Even if it's your spouse, parent, or best friend, there may be something going on there that makes you think to yourself, "but…". In this story, a cat is the catalyst (no pun intended) to a relationship crashing down. The couple has been together for 6 months, so it's pretty young, and they're still building trust and comfortability. The boyfriend is the one with his cat, Mr. Whiskers, who he's had for 5 years. The boyfriend admits that Mr. Whiskers isn't the most friendly at first, and he takes a while to adjust to new people. But of course he does, he's a cat! It's one of their stereotypes, of course they hiss when they don't know someone.

But the girlfriend takes it personally; she complains constantly about Mr. Whiskers keeping her up at night, hissing at her, and destroying her things. She gives her boyfriend an ultimatum: it's her or the cat. Well, he chooses the cat, but you'll have to read the full story for all the details.
